How to Use Claude in Slack: Setup for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise Plans
How to use Claude in Slack: add the app, connect your account and tag @Claude. Team and Enterprise use Claude Tag; Pro and Max use the earlier app.
Quick answer: Install Claude from the Slack Marketplace, then tag @Claude in a channel or send it a direct message. Team and Enterprise workspaces use Claude Tag, which an Owner pairs once. Pro and Max users on other workspaces use the earlier per-user app. Free? No, you need a paid Claude plan.
Claude in Slack changed in 2026. Slack's help page says Claude Tag replaces the current Claude app from 3 August 2026, and Anthropic's migration guide says the earlier app stopped answering in channels of paired workspaces on 5 October 2026. This guide covers both versions. Last checked: 13 October 2026.
What do you need before you start?
You need a Slack workspace, a paid Claude plan and, for some steps, an admin. The exact requirement depends on which version you will use.
| Item | Claude Tag (current) | Earlier Claude app |
|---|---|---|
| Claude plan | Team or Enterprise | Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise (per Slack) |
| Who sets it up | A Claude Owner, plus a Slack admin who approves the install | Anyone allowed to install Slack apps |
| Each Slack user needs a Claude seat? | No | Yes, each person connects their own account |
| Status | Public beta | Still answers Pro and Max users in workspaces not paired with Claude Tag |
Sources: Claude Tag overview, Slack Help Center, as of 13 October 2026.
Claude Tag is not available on Free, Pro or Max plans, according to Anthropic's overview. If you are on Pro or Max, skip to Method 2.
How do you add Claude to Slack? (Method 1: install the app)
Both versions start with the same Slack install. According to Slack's help article, any member with permission to install apps can add Claude. Members without that permission can send a request instead.
- Open the Claude page in the Slack Marketplace (linked from Slack's help article).
- Click Add to Slack.
- Click Allow.
- Return to your workspace.
On Enterprise Grid, org owners, org admins and integration admins install at the organization level:
- Click your organization name in the sidebar.
- Choose Tools & settings, then Manage apps.
- Search for Claude and click Continue.
- Click Allow, then Add to workspaces, then Next.
- Pick all workspaces or specific ones, review the scopes, and click Next.
- Tick I'm ready to add this app and click Add app.
- Optionally choose who can use Claude (Everyone, Specific members and groups or No one) and click Save.
Installing the app does not put Claude in any channel. Anthropic's admin docs say it reads and posts only in channels it has been added to, and in direct messages.
How do you set up Claude Tag? (Method 2: Team and Enterprise)
A Claude Owner pairs your Slack workspace with your Claude organization once. Anthropic's overview describes the flow.
- After the Slack install, post @Claude connect in a channel, or send
connectin a direct message with Claude. - Claude returns a pairing code. The code expires after 15 minutes, per Anthropic's admin page.
- As a Claude Owner, open claude.ai/admin-settings/claude-tag and enter the code.
- Set a monthly spend limit.
- Add Claude to the channels you want, then launch.
To add Claude to a channel later, type /invite @Claude in that channel. The docs also list an Add to channel button and an Approve and post button.
By default, anyone in the paired workspace can tag @Claude. An Owner can restrict this to people in the Claude organization or, on Enterprise, to specific roles. You can ask @Claude what can you access from this channel? or click Configure in the footer of a Claude reply to see what it can reach.
How do you connect your own Claude account? (Method 3: Pro and Max, earlier app)
If your workspace is not paired with Claude Tag, the earlier app works per person. The steps below come from Slack's help article.
- Click Agents & tools in the Slack sidebar.
- Click Apps and select Claude.
- Select Open app, then the Home tab.
- Click Connect account and sign in to Claude.
Verify this step: the sidebar label may differ by Slack version. Anthropic's connector page says to find Claude in your Slack apps list and choose Connect Account.
To talk to Claude, open Claude under Agents & tools and type in the chat. To bring it into a channel, open the channel, click its name, open the Agents & apps tab, click Add agent or app, then click Add next to Claude. You can also mention @Claude in a channel or thread. In a thread, Claude replies in the thread.
Slack's article gives the context limits. A channel mention sends the 20 most recent messages. A thread sends the 50 most recent replies. Slack conversations are not synced with your Claude account on the web.
How do you let Claude search Slack from a Claude chat? (the connector)
The Slack connector is separate from the app. It lets Claude, inside a Claude chat, search your workspace's channels, direct messages and files, according to Anthropic's connector page. The app must be installed first.
- An Owner opens Organization settings > Connectors (claude.ai/admin-settings/connectors) and enables Slack.
- Each member opens Customize > Connectors, selects Slack, then Connect.
- In a chat, select +, then Connectors, and turn on Slack.
Anthropic says disconnecting removes your account connection and deletes past conversations within 30 days. Slack conversations do not appear in your claude.ai history.
Can Claude write code from Slack?
Yes, on Pro and Max, with limits. The legacy Claude Code in Slack feature starts a coding session when you mention @Claude with a task, per Anthropic's Claude Code docs.
Requirements: a Pro or Max plan, a workspace not connected to Claude Tag, cloud sessions enabled, and a GitHub account connected at claude.ai/code with at least one repository.
- Have a workspace admin install the app with Add to Slack.
- Open Claude under Apps, go to the App Home tab and click Connect.
- Configure cloud sessions at claude.ai/code.
- Set Routing Mode to Code only or Code + Chat.
- Run
/invite @Claudein each channel.
Claude's replies include buttons: View Session, Create PR, Retry as Code and Change Repo. The docs list two limits: GitHub only, and one pull request per session. It works in public and private channels but not in direct messages. Sessions count against your own plan limits. On Team and Enterprise, the docs say to set up Claude Tag instead.
Which method should you choose?
Pick by plan first, then by who needs to use it.
| Method | Plan | Cost | Difficulty | Limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Tag | Team, Enterprise | Org spend limit, no per-seat charge for channel work | Medium (Owner and Slack admin) | Public beta; channels it was added to | Whole teams sharing one Claude |
| Earlier app | Pro, Max | Your plan | Easy | 20 messages in a channel, 50 in a thread | Individuals in unpaired workspaces |
| Connector | Team, Enterprise per docs | Your plan | Easy | Search only, run from Claude chat | Pulling Slack context into a chat |
| Claude Code in Slack | Pro, Max | Your plan limits | Medium | GitHub only; channels only | Quick code fixes from a thread |
Prices and plan rules are as of 13 October 2026. Anthropic publishes the connector as Team and Enterprise, but its launch post carries a 26 January 2026 update saying the connector is available to Pro and Max subscribers.
What's free and what costs money?
Nothing here is free in the sense of a free Claude account. Slack's help article lists a paid Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise account as the requirement for the earlier app.
For Claude Tag, Anthropic's overview says there is no per-seat charge. Work in channels, threads and group DMs draws from a usage balance under a monthly limit an Owner sets. A one-to-one DM from a member with a connected account runs on and bills to that person's seat. The seat must include Claude Code, or on Enterprise be a Standard or Usage-Based Chat seat held by someone who also has Cowork. The organization spend limit does not apply to those DMs.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| @Claude does not reply in a channel | Claude was never added | Run /invite @Claude in the channel |
| Claude does not reply in a channel, though it did before | Workspace is paired with Claude Tag; the earlier app stopped answering there on 5 October 2026 | Ask an Owner to finish the Claude Tag setup, or use DMs |
| "Request to install" appears instead of Add to Slack | You lack permission to install apps | Send the request to a Slack admin |
| Pairing code rejected | The code expires after 15 minutes | Post @Claude connect again for a new code |
| A "This workspace isn't set up for Claude Tag yet" notice | No organization has paired the workspace and your account is not Pro or Max | Ask a Claude Owner to pair it, or upgrade to Pro or Max |
| Claude cannot see a private channel | Its join permission covers public channels only | A member adds Claude to the private channel |
Is this allowed, and is my data safe?
Yes. Both are official Anthropic integrations installed through the Slack Marketplace, and a Slack admin controls approval. Anthropic's launch post says Claude only accesses channels and conversations you have permission to view.
For Claude Tag, the access is narrower: only channels where Claude was added, plus DMs. Slack Connect channels (shared with another company) work only where an Owner or Claude Tag admin has turned them on, and then with limited access. Uninstalling the app deletes the workspace's Claude data on Anthropic's side, except on Enterprise Grid, where an Owner must also disconnect the Grid in Claude Tag settings.
One practical rule: tag Claude only in threads whose full contents you are comfortable sending as context. If you automate other Slack work, such as sending Google Form responses to Slack, keep those channels separate from channels where Claude is active.
What's still unclear?
Three points are not settled by the published docs as of 13 October 2026.
- Dates. Slack says Claude Tag replaces the Claude app from 3 August 2026. Anthropic says the earlier app stopped answering in paired workspaces on 5 October 2026. Neither page explains the gap, so they may be separate milestones.
- Who is eligible. Slack's article says the Claude app works with Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise accounts. Anthropic says Claude Tag is Team and Enterprise only, and that Pro and Max stay on the earlier app only in unpaired workspaces.
- Beta status. Claude Tag is in public beta, and the docs pages carry no publication date. Menu names and billing rules may change.
The weakest point of this guide: two vendors document one product, and their wording differs. If a menu does not match, trust the live screen in your own Slack and check the linked pages.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude in Slack free?
The Slack app itself has no separate fee, but you need a paid Claude account. Slack's help page says the Claude app works with a paid Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise account. A free Claude account is not listed. Claude Tag, the Team and Enterprise version, bills channel work to an organization spend limit that an Owner sets (as of 13 October 2026).
What is Claude Tag?
Claude Tag is Anthropic's current Slack product for Team and Enterprise plans. It is in public beta. Instead of each person linking an account, an Owner pairs the workspace once and Claude acts as one shared agent that anyone can tag with @Claude in channels where it has been added.
Can Claude read my private Slack channels?
Claude Tag reads and posts only in channels it has been added to, and in direct messages. Its channel-join permission covers public channels only, so a member must add it to a private channel. The separate Slack connector searches only what your own Slack account can already see.
Why does @Claude not answer in my channel?
Common causes: Claude was never added to that channel, your Claude account is not connected, or your workspace is paired with Claude Tag, which stopped the earlier app answering in channels on 5 October 2026. Run /invite @Claude, then check the Home tab of the Claude app.
Does Claude in Slack work in direct messages?
Yes. Anthropic's docs say one-to-one direct messages are not affected by the move to Claude Tag, and they run on the user's own Claude account. An Owner can turn off direct messages for the whole organization. The legacy Claude Code in Slack bot does not work in DMs.
Do I need a Claude seat for every Slack user?
Not for Claude Tag. Anthropic's docs say Slack users do not each need a Claude seat, and there is no per-seat charge for channel, thread and group DM work. One-to-one DMs from a member with a connected account run on that person's seat instead.
